Public Sector Training in Samoa

The Samoa Public Sector Improvement Program project to strengthen public sector project management skills is about to enter stage two. Since September 2008 a group of more than 20 public sector personnel have been participating in a skills development program in Samoa. Participants have been drawn from a range of Ministries, including Education, Prime Minister and Cabinet, the Public Service Commission, Ministry of Women and Community Development, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Revenue and Ministry of Finance. The first stage strengthened skills in mentoring, coaching and training so that this first cohort can assist future participants in 2010 and 2011. David Kay and Jane Perry facilitated the program which will eventually lead to the award of the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.

The three-year project is managed by DKTD and David Kay is the Project Director. Along with the project partners - Victoria University in Melbourne and the NUS Oloamanu Centre for Professional Development in Samoa, DKTD is managing the delivery of both trainer qualifications and project management qualifications to be offered by VU. Eventually the Oloamanu Centre will take an increasing role in the delivery of skills development to ensure that the program is sustainable in the long term.

There has been some minor chnanges to the scheduling as a result of the tsunami in Samoa. The first cohort is expected to complete in February 2010, with a second cohort beginning in March 2010.
